This unit introduces the major movements that establish the foundation of modernism in art practice. Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and the subsequent varieties of strategies that culminate in Conceptual Art of the 1970s.

This unit investigates the revival of painting in the 1980s and the pluralism of approaches to art practice that characterize the contemporary scene. Emphasis is placed upon the variety of approaches dominating the current discourse on visual art, such as deconstruction, post-colonialism, gender & global issues
